Right now I just finished watching an episode of one of my favorite shows, Road to Avonlea.
If you are a fan of the Anne of Green Gables books and movies, you will greatly enjoy this show. It was filmed in Canada in the 1990s and was a big hit in Canada. Surprisingly, it's somewhat unknown in the States. It's not streaming on any platforms except for one and it's very expensive to subscribe to, so the better option is to purchase the DVD series when it's on sale (usually around Christmas time). It's a family and Christian friendly show. There are only a few episodes in the whole series that I'm not that particularly fond of (one about women's rights to vote and another about a "witch", who wasn't really a witch anyway). Also, some of the same characters from the Anne of Green Gables movies (the ones directed by Kevin Sullivan) are in this show as well with the same actors. I also especially enjoyed seeing the little character of "Davey" who was so funny in the Anne of Avonlea book. You can watch some of the episodes free on https://www.gazebotv.com/browse
Audiobook I'm Enjoying
I'm also really enjoying listening to the Audiobook version of Robinson Cruseo. I had liked the 1950s film version of the book, but had never actually read the book. I've been listening to the audio book version on Chirp, and I was pleasantly surprised by it!
"Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe is about a man who is shipwrecked on a deserted island. He survives alone for 28 years, learning to fend for himself and reflecting on his life and faith. Eventually, he rescues a native man, Friday, and they form a friendship. Crusoe is finally rescued and returns to England. It’s a tale of adventure, survival, and personal growth.
There are so many wonderful Christian-based quotes woven throughout the book because the time period when the book was written was when most of the western world had a better understanding of God's word and they were more Bible oriented in their society.
Quotes like:
• “Redemption from sin is greater then redemption from affliction.”
• "I learned to look more upon the bright side of my condition, and less upon the dark side, and to consider what I enjoyed, rather than what I wanted : and this gave me sometimes such secret comforts, that I cannot express them ; and which I take notice of here, to put those discontented people in mind of it, who cannot enjoy comfortably what God has given them, because they see and covet something that he has not given them. All our discontents about what we want appeared to me to spring from the want of thankfulness for what we have."
The film is also available on Amazon prime and might be on YouTube as well. If you'd like to buy the Audiobook for just $2.00 from the Chirp app CLICK HERE.
I just finished reading also "On the Banks of Plum Creek" by Laura Ingalls Wilder. This is part of the Little House on the Prairie book series. I really loved this book and all of her books. The part about the grasshoppers (which were actually locusts) was especially wild!
I remember as a kid we would sometimes get what we called at the time "Mexican General Grasshoppers" in our area in Southern Arizona. It's correct name is the Western Horse Lubber Grasshopper (Taeniopoda eques).
This species is known for its striking appearance and can be found in both the southwestern United States, including Arizona, and parts of Mexico.
The Western Horse Lubber Grasshopper is quite large and typically has a shiny black body with bright yellow markings. Some individuals, especially in Mexico, can be yellowish, orangish, or greenish. I remember one year as a kid there were a lot of them and all of the kids at school were interested in seeing them on the playground, but there weren't nearly as many as described in the book "On The Banks of Plum Creek." These grasshoppers in Arizona would hiss at you and could bite you. My mom told me that one of her friends was driving on a road one year and suddenly saw the whole road covered in them and his truck slid right off the road! He was okay, but wow!
So, these have been some of my favorite things that I've been enjoying recently. Feel free to share your thoughts below.
In His Grace,
Mrs. Adrienne Jason
