Podcast | Embracing a Non Diet Culture Approach to Fitness

In this episode I talk about how Christian women and homemakers can take a more "non-diet-culture" approach to fitness and health. Diet culture tries to make us think that we must be a certain size or body shape in order to be happy and healthy but this simply isn't so! Let's focus instead on simply having a healthier approach to fitness and embracing our bodies with grace and kindness, which are temples of the Holy Spirit!

Embracing a healthy "non-diet culture" approach to fitness

In a world where fitness is often equated with weight loss, it can be refreshing and empowering to focus on health and well-being instead. For Christian women, maintaining a fitness routine that honors God and nurtures the body He has given us can be a fulfilling journey. Here’s a guide to help you begin and maintain a fitness routine that prioritizes health over body size.

Understanding the Purpose of Fitnes

The Bible reminds us that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). This perspective shifts the focus from societal standards of beauty to a desire to honor God through caring for our bodies. Fitness, therefore, becomes a way to enhance our ability to serve others, increase our energy, and improve our overall well-being.

Steps to Begin Your Fitness Journey

• Set Clear, Health-Focused Goals: Instead of aiming for a specific weight, set goals that enhance your health and overall well-being. These could include improving cardiovascular health, increasing strength and flexibility, or boosting your energy levels.

• Choose Enjoyable Activities: Find physical activities that you enjoy. Whether it’s walking, dancing, swimming, or a structured workout program, the key is to choose something that you look forward to. This will help you stay consistent and make fitness a joyful part of your routine.

• Incorporate Faith into Your Routine: Integrate your faith into your fitness journey. Listen to worship music while you exercise, meditate on scripture, or join a faith-based fitness group. This can make your workouts spiritually enriching as well as physically beneficial.

• Start Slowly and Build Gradually: If you’re new to exercise or haven’t been active for a while, start with gentle activities and gradually increase the intensity. This helps prevent injury and makes it easier to stick with your routine.

• Create a Schedule: Consistency is key to maintaining a fitness routine. Set aside specific times in your week for exercise and treat these appointments with the same importance as any other commitment.

Maintaining Your Fitness Routine

• Stay Motivated with Scripture: Use Bible verses to keep you motivated. Verses like Philippians 4:13 (“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”) can provide encouragement and strength on challenging days.

• Find a Community: Join a fitness group or find a workout buddy. Having a community can provide accountability, support, and encouragement. Many churches offer fitness classes or groups that combine physical activity with spiritual growth. **Make sure however that it is one that is focused on body positivity and not on diet culture.**

• Celebrate Non-Scale Victories: Focus on the positive changes in your health and well-being rather than the number on the scale. Celebrate improvements in your stamina, strength, mood, and energy levels.

• Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to how your body feels and adjust your routine as needed. Rest is an important part of any fitness plan, so make sure to include rest days and listen to your body’s signals.

• Pray for Guidance and Strength: Regularly seek God’s guidance in your fitness journey. Pray for the strength to stay committed, the wisdom to make healthy choices, and the grace to be kind to yourself.

Starting and maintaining a fitness routine that focuses on health rather than weight loss can be a rewarding and spiritually enriching experience. By setting health-focused goals, choosing enjoyable activities, and integrating your faith into your fitness journey, you can honor God with your body and enjoy the many benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Remember, your worth is not determined by your body size but by your identity in Christ. Embrace this journey with joy and gratitude, knowing that you are caring for the temple God has given you.
